Opal SA Construction (BLD 317725) installs concrete footpaths, garden paths, driveway crossovers, and commercial walkways across all Adelaide metro suburbs. We handle everything from a simple front garden path to council crossover reinstatement — with the same licensed crew, written quote, and 10-year warranty we bring to every job.
Concrete is the best long-term material for Adelaide paths. It outlasts paving stones on reactive clay soils, requires minimal maintenance, and provides consistent, safe footing from the front gate to the front door — year after year.
| Path Type | Finish | Price per m² |
|---|---|---|
| Residential garden path | Broom finish | $65–$90 |
| Residential path | Exposed aggregate | $90–$120 |
| Side access path (bin/gate) | Broom finish | $70–$95 |
| Driveway crossover | Broom or coloured | $80–$120 |
| Commercial walkway | Broom — heavy-duty spec | $85–$120 |
Prices include concrete supply, labour, formwork, F62 mesh reinforcement, 25 MPa concrete, control joints, and broom finish. Demolition of existing concrete is quoted as an add-on.
Front garden paths (from the front gate or street to the front door) and rear paths (between the house, garage, and entertaining area) are the most common work we do in this category. A well-formed front path improves safety, drainage, and the property's street presence.
Standard residential path specifications: 1.0–1.2m wide, 80–100mm thick, F62 mesh, 25 MPa concrete, broom finish, control joints at 2–3m spacing.
The side passage between a home and the fence line needs to be wide enough for wheelie bins and occasional access. We typically pour these at 1.0–1.2m wide and 100mm thick (slightly heavier spec than a pedestrian-only path) to cope with bin weight and incidental foot traffic.
On narrow side passages (600–900mm), we can form and pour with concrete pump access — common in Adelaide's inner suburbs where truck access is limited.
The crossover — the section of driveway that crosses the nature strip and connects to the Council kerb — sits in the public road reserve. Any new or altered crossover requires a permit from your local council. We handle the permit application as part of the job scope.
Crossover specifications follow Council standards: typically 3.0–5.5m wide for a single vehicle access, 150mm thick, 32 MPa concrete with SL72 mesh. We match the broom direction and joint spacing to the existing footpath.
Commercial footpaths, accessible pedestrian routes, and retail frontages require heavier specifications and compliance with AS 1428.1 (Access and Mobility). We install commercial-grade footpaths with:
Adelaide's reactive clay soils affect paths the same way they affect driveways — seasonal ground movement can lift and crack a path that isn't adequately prepared. The good news is that paths are lighter than driveways, so the reinforcement requirements are lower. But a proper base (compacted crushed rock or sand) and adequate control joint placement are still essential.
In the northern suburbs (Salisbury, Elizabeth, Para Hills, Gawler), we typically use a 100mm compacted base and closer-spaced control joints (every 2m rather than 3m). On coastal soils (Glenelg, Henley Beach, Semaphore), standard preparation is sufficient.
In South Australia, any work in the Council road reserve (between your property boundary and the kerb) requires a permit. This includes:
We lodge the permit application on your behalf and schedule work to start once the permit is issued (typically 5–10 business days). We have experience with all Adelaide metro councils including City of Salisbury, City of Tea Tree Gully, City of Campbelltown, City of Unley, City of Mitcham, City of Onkaparinga, and Port Adelaide Enfield.
