Exposed Aggregate Concrete Adelaide
Adelaide's Most Popular Driveway Finish

Exposed aggregate is the most requested concrete finish in Adelaide — and it's easy to see why. The natural pebbled surface is slip-resistant, durable, handles Adelaide's UV and summer heat better than plain grey, and looks substantially better over the long term. Opal SA Construction (BLD 317725) installs exposed aggregate driveways, patios, and pool surrounds across all Adelaide metro suburbs.

Unlike some contractors who subcontract the wash step, our own trained crew handles every stage of an exposed aggregate pour — including the return visit at exactly the right cure stage to wash and expose the aggregate. Getting that timing right is what separates a quality exposed aggregate finish from a patchy or shallow one.

Aggregate Options for Adelaide Homes

The aggregate type determines the colour, texture, and overall feel of the finished surface. We bring sample boards to every site measure:

River Pebble

Smooth, rounded stones in natural grey, beige, and sand tones. The most popular choice for Adelaide's brick-and-tile homes. Cost-effective and widely available.

Granite Aggregate

Angular granite pieces with more sparkle and texture. Available in grey, pink, and black mixes. Suits contemporary renders and two-storey designs.

White Quartz

Bright white aggregate for a modern, high-contrast look. Popular in new builds with white or light-grey render. The most striking finish available.

Coloured Stone Mixes

Terracotta, charcoal, copper, and cream blends. Allows the driveway or patio to match the home's colour palette. Costs slightly more than natural aggregate.

Why Exposed Aggregate Suits Adelaide's Climate

Adelaide's climate creates specific demands on outdoor concrete surfaces:

  • UV resistance: The aggregate stones are harder and more UV-stable than the cement paste they're embedded in. While plain grey concrete bleaches and becomes chalky, exposed aggregate maintains its appearance because the surface is mostly stone, not paste.
  • Heat reflection: Light-coloured aggregate reflects solar radiation better than plain grey — surface temperatures on light-toned exposed aggregate are 5–10°C lower than a plain grey driveway on a 40°C day.
  • Slip resistance in wet/dry cycles: Adelaide's dry summers followed by winter rain create wet surfaces after long dry periods. The pebbled texture of exposed aggregate provides reliable grip even on surfaces that have been dry for months.
  • Stain hiding: Tyre rubber marks, oil drips, and leaf stains disappear into the aggregate pattern. On plain grey concrete, these marks are clearly visible.

The Exposed Aggregate Installation Process

Timing is everything. The aggregate wash step must happen at exactly the right stage:

  1. Pour and finish: Concrete is placed, screeded level, and a retarder spray applied to the surface within 20 minutes of finishing.
  2. Cover and wait: Hessian or plastic covers the slab. In summer (Adelaide's challenge), we return within 8–12 hours. In winter, 12–18 hours.
  3. Wash: At exactly the right cure stage, the retarder is activated with water and the surface paste is brush-washed away to the desired depth of aggregate exposure.
  4. Cure for 28 days: The slab is allowed to reach full design strength before the penetrating sealer is applied.
  5. Seal: A penetrating impregnating sealer enhances colour and prevents staining. We apply this at the 28-day point.

We Know Adelaide Conditions Inside Out

We're not just another concreting company – we're Adelaide locals who've worked across every suburb from the Adelaide Hills to coastal areas. This means we understand:

  • Reactive clay soils common in northern suburbs (Para Vista, Salisbury, Munno Para, Gawler) requiring proper base preparation and reinforcement
  • Adelaide's dry, hot climate and how it affects concrete curing and finishing
  • Local council requirements for crossovers, drainage, footpath compliance, and permits
  • Seasonal weather patterns and optimal concreting times for SA conditions

This local knowledge translates to better installations, fewer problems, and concrete that performs reliably for 20-30+ years in South Australian conditions.

Precision Engineering for Every Residential Project

We don't just pour concrete – we engineer solutions:

  • Proper structural design for slabs, ensuring load-bearing capacity meets requirements
  • Strategic reinforcement placement (steel mesh and rebar where needed)
  • Calculated drainage falls to protect your foundation and prevent water pooling
  • Control joint positioning to manage natural concrete movement
  • Soil-specific base preparation tailored to your property's ground conditions

Every residential project follows Australian Standards and local building codes. Our precision approach ensures structural integrity that lasts a lifetime.
