9+ Years Concreting Across Adelaide — What We Know That Others Don't
Opal SA Construction was built on a straightforward premise: Adelaide homeowners deserve a concreting team that understands local conditions, quotes honestly, and finishes what it starts. After 9 years and hundreds of completed projects across the metro area, that remains our standard on every job.
Adelaide Soil Expertise
The single biggest differentiator between a concreting team that understands Adelaide and one that doesn't is how they handle reactive clay soils. Adelaide's northern corridor — Salisbury, Gawler, Elizabeth, Para Hills, Angle Vale — and its southern corridor — Morphett Vale, Hallett Cove, Reynella — sit on AS 2870 Class H1 to H2 soils. These clays expand when wet and contract during Adelaide's dry summers by up to 35 mm across a typical driveway slab.
An undersized slab on uncompacted roadbase, without the right mesh grade and control joint spacing, will crack on these soils within 3–5 years. We check the AS 2870 classification for every job before finalising the specification — and if the site conditions demand a premium spec, we say so upfront rather than quoting light and over-delivering on problems.
Our Standards on Every Job
AS 3600 / AS 2870 Compliance
Every residential slab is designed to AS 2870 (Residential Slabs and Footings). Commercial floors follow AS 3600 (Concrete Structures). We don't improvise on standards.
25–32 MPa Concrete Specification
Standard residential driveways use 25 MPa. Pool surrounds and coastal sites use 32 MPa. We specify the right strength for the application, not the cheapest mix available.
SL72 / SL82 Reinforcement
SL72 mesh on standard Class M sites. SL82 on Class H1 and H2 reactive clay sites. Correct lap lengths and cover maintained on every pour.
