Virginia is a semi-rural suburb in Adelaide's northern growth corridor, approximately 30 kilometres north of the CBD. It sits within the Town of Playford and straddles the boundary between older market-garden holdings and newer residential development. Blocks here tend to be larger than in surrounding suburbs, with many properties on quarter-acre or half-acre lots, and a significant number of hobby-farm blocks in the $500k–$900k range that include sheds, horse yards, and extensive outdoor areas.
Soil conditions in Virginia are more varied than in the suburbs immediately to the east. The western portions near the Virginia Road corridor tend to have sandy loam with good natural drainage — ideal subgrade conditions for concrete flatwork that resist heave and drain quickly. Further east, the soil transitions to the heavier clay found across Adelaide's northern plains, requiring the same reactive-clay approach used across Angle Vale and Gawler. We always assess subgrade conditions on-site before quoting to ensure the base preparation spec matches the actual ground conditions on your block.
The rural character of Virginia means many projects involve large surface areas: double or triple-width driveways for properties with carports, sheds, and boat storage; concrete aprons in front of large farm sheds; and full perimeter paths around homes on larger rural blocks. We also pour slabs for large workshops, garages, and machinery storage areas in Virginia, including footings for verandahs and pergolas. Post-hole pricing for pergola footings is included on request when we're already on-site for a larger pour.
Virginia's position adjacent to the Northern Expressway and John Rice Avenue means access for our concrete trucks and pump trucks is straightforward for most properties. Some older market-garden properties with narrow or informal driveways require a smaller agitator and may benefit from a concrete pump to reach the back of the block — we assess this as part of the free site measure and include any pump costs in the written quote upfront, not as an unexpected extra.
Common projects in Virginia include: concrete driveways for new homes replacing compacted gravel on rural blocks; large shed slabs and machine footings; horse yard aprons and feed bay concrete; alfresco slabs adjoining rural homesteads; and footpath connections from garages to front entries. Adelaide's outdoor lifestyle demands a patio that can handle decades of summer entertaining, pool splashback, and UV exposure without cracking, fading, or lifting. Opal SA Construction (BLD 317725) installs concrete patios, alfresco areas, and pool surrounds across all Adelaide metro suburbs — poured at 100 mm thick, reinforced with SL72 steel mesh, and set to AS 3500.3 drainage fall requirements.
Every patio is graded at a minimum 1:100 fall away from the building. We use 25 MPa concrete for standard entertaining areas and 32 MPa for pool surrounds and spa pads. Penetrating acrylic sealer is applied on the day of pour on exposed aggregate and coloured finishes to protect against Adelaide's intense UV and maximise colour retention.

Exposed aggregate is the most requested patio finish across Adelaide. The natural stone surface achieves an R10–R11 slip resistance rating when wet — the minimum required by AS 1428.1 for areas adjacent to pools and wet zones. The aggregate texture also keeps surface temperatures cooler underfoot on hot summer days.
We also offer coloured oxide concrete, where pigments are integrated directly into the mix, and stencilled concrete patterns (Ashlar slate, European fan, cobblestone) to replicate high-end paving at a lower cost without individual pavers shifting on reactive clay.
