The Reactive Clay Factor — Critical for Adelaide

This is where the comparison shifts most significantly, and it's the factor most paver sales pitches leave out.

Adelaide's northern suburbs (Salisbury, Elizabeth, Gawler, Para Hills) and parts of the south (Morphett Vale, Reynella) sit on Class H1 and H2 reactive clay soils. These soils expand when wet and contract when dry — the seasonal cycle in Adelaide, with dry summers and wet winters, creates repeated soil movement.

What happens to pavers on reactive clay:

Individual pavers are bedded on a sand layer over a compacted base. When the clay underneath moves, the sand layer shifts unevenly — causing individual pavers to lift, sink, and tip. Joint sand washes out, weeds establish, and within 5–10 years in a reactive soil suburb, the driveway needs to be completely relaid.

What happens to concrete on reactive clay:

A properly engineered reinforced concrete slab (with adequate mesh, base depth, and control joints) moves as a single unit. The control joints accommodate the movement. Cracking can occur along or near control joints, but the slab stays flat and usable. On reactive clay, we increase slab thickness and mesh specification to manage the movement — this adds some cost, but the result lasts significantly longer than pavers on the same ground.

The verdict on reactive clay: Concrete wins clearly. Pavers on H1 or H2 soil are a maintenance burden that compounds over time.

On Class A or S coastal soils (Glenelg, Henley Beach, Semaphore, Brighton), pavers perform much better — the stable ground removes their biggest disadvantage. On these soils, it genuinely comes down to preference and budget.

Concrete maintenance:

• Inspect control joints every few years; re-seal if sealant has cracked

Paver maintenance:

• Re-sand joints annually (kiln-dried sand, brush in)
• Reset lifted or sunken pavers as needed (can become a regular job on reactive clay)
• Annual weed treatment in joints
• Sealing every 3–5 years (more frequently than concrete due to joint exposure)

Repair: Which Is Easier?

Concrete repairs are more visible. If a section of concrete cracks outside a control joint, the repair (grind and patch, or crack injection) is usually visible — concrete colour matching is imperfect.

Paver repairs are more flexible. Individual pavers can be lifted and relevelled, replaced, or regrouted without affecting the rest of the surface. A matching paver can (usually) be sourced if a few are damaged.

If the ability to invisibly repair small damage areas is important to you — pavers have an advantage here. If longevity and low maintenance is the priority — concrete wins.

Can you lay pavers over existing concrete?
